Advantages of Outsourcing
From LoveToKnow Jobs
Companies will want to consider the advantages of outsourcing before deciding to take this step.
Advantages of Outsourcing for Companies
For companies, the reasons why outsourcing makes sense are as follows:
- Lower Operating Costs
- Access to a Larger Pool of Workers
- Company Can Access Better Technology at a Lower Cost
- Productivity Increases
- Profitability Increases
Lower Operating Costs
Companies always need to make sure that they keep a close eye on expenses. When some tasks are outsourced to workers overseas, companies reap the benefit of lower costs. Many businesses are looking to countries, such as India, who have a well-educated population who are willing to provide a good level of service for lower wages than domestic workers would demand for the same type of work.
Customer service duties provided by call centers and medical billing paperwork are just two examples of the types of work that are being outsourced on a regular basis. Teleradiology is another type of work that is outsourced regularly. Licensed radiologists in foreign countries read X-rays at night and on weekends, when radiologists on staff at local hospitals are not available.
Access a Large Pool of Workers
If work can be performed off site, companies are no longer limited to local candidates when looking for people to perform certain tasks. Not all outsourced workers live overseas, and being able to work remotely means that employers can hire the right candidate for the job, no matter where they happen to live.
Company Can Access Better Technology at a Lower Cost
Technology is changing rapidly and it is expensive for companies to keep up with the latest advances. Instead of investing the considerable financial resources necessary to continuously upgrade equipment and train staff, it may make more sense to "borrow" the technology from a company that has already made this investment.
When a company enters into an agreement with another company to provide some services involving new technology, both parties benefit. One of them reaps the benefit of the other company's investment, and the company that has already bought the equipment gains needed capital.
Productivity Increases
Productivity means getting more accomplished with less time and effort. When a company starts outsourcing, it must break down duties into smaller tasks. These tasks become part of an organized process, where each person involved becomes an efficient specialist, as opposed to a generalist who tries to do everything.
When workers are able to focus on a limited number of tasks, they will become more efficient in performing their duties. They know what is expected from them and they are not distracted by having new demands put on them. When someone is trying to juggle too many conflicting tasks at once, the person won't be able to do all of them well.
Profits Increase
A company's goal is to make money. If the organization isn't turning a profit, then it will eventually have to fold. If outsourcing routine duties that many people would consider the "grunt work" of the company to off site workers means that company employees can focus on more interesting work that will generate more profits for the company, then it can be argued that the advantages of outsourcing outweigh the disadvantages.
As the company generates more profits, it will have more resources to invest in better wages for employees, improved benefits packages and pension plans. Employees can only benefit from this scenario. Instead of seeing outsourcing as a negative trend, perhaps what is needed here is to see it as something that will create new opportunities for workers instead.
