Coping with Job Loss
From LoveToKnow Jobs
Do you want to learn more about coping with job loss? Whether you've experienced the unexpected loss of your job or you're simply trying to figure out how you'll deal with things if you find yourself in such a situation, it's important to focus on moving forward rather than looking backwards and trying to second guess what has already taken place. Jon Gordon, author of international bestseller The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy, The No Complaining Rule: Positive Ways to Deal with Negativity at Work, and Training Camp shares his insights on the subject with readers of LoveToKnow Jobs in this exclusive interview.
What is different about losing one’s job in the 21st Century than in years past?
On the positive side I believe there are many ways for someone who has lost their job to start their own business and to make a living and work with passion doing something they love. The world is more entreprenueurial now. On the flip side, since we are dealing with a recession there is more fear about finding a new job or starting a business. There are also fewer jobs available now. This will lead more people to start their own business I believe.
What are some of the common pitfalls that people who are coping with job loss need to take care to avoid?
Common pitfalls they must avoid are allowing the fear, negativity and self doubt to stop them from taking positive actions. They also need to ignore the naysayers and the media. They also need to not focus on the past and instead invest their energy in creating their future.
What steps can people take to move past the fear and anger associated with job loss to moving forward?
First they need to forgive their boss and company. You can't create your future if you are focusing on the past. Next, create a positive vision for the future. Use this time to ask: What do I want now? What can I learn from this experience? How can I grow? What actions do I need to take? Also choose faith instead of fear. They both believe in a future that hasn't happened yet so why not choose the positive future of faith instead of the negative future of fear.
Can people take the loss of a job and turn it into something positive?
Of course they can. My being fired led to the work that I do now. The worst day of my life lead to my best. If you believe your best days are behind you, they are. If you believe your best days are ahead of you they are. Every adversity offers you a gift in the future if you are able to learn and grow from it. Its about perspective and knowing that we will all face adversity in our life. The key is how we respond.
What Inspired you to write The Energy Bus, The No Complaining Rule, and Training Camp?
I was inspired to write these books from God. Can't say it any other way. After I was fired I remember praying and asking God to guide me. I prayed "provide for me and my family and I will do your work to help others" I had never done that before. Ever since then I know my mission is to empower, encourage and uplift others. My life changed after that moment.
How can reading your books help people cope with job loss?
I have been told that my books inspire people to stay positive, overcome negativity and to strive to be their best and bring out the best in others. I'm told that they help people shift to a more positive perspective and tell themselves a positive story. Instead of seeing themselves as a victim in a horror story they see themselves as a hero in an inspirational tale. This changes their beliefs and actions and leads to results.
