Jobs for 14 Year Olds
From LoveToKnow Jobs
Are there jobs for 14 year olds? A young person who wants to work does have some options when it comes to paid employment.
Federal Law and Young Workers
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the law that provides guidelines for youth in the workforce. The minimum age for holding a job is 14 under this piece of legislation.
Looking for Work as a Youth
Even though the law states that 14-year-olds can work in the U.S., it may be challenging to find an employer willing to employ someone of this age. Here are a few tips to help you get a job at a young age:
Put Your Best Foot Forward
When you are approaching a business to ask about work opportunities, it's important to be neat and well-groomed. You want to indicate to the person who is in a position to hire you that you are mature enough to handle the responsibilities of the job you are applying for.
Be Enthusiastic
An employer will be much more willing to hire someone who isn't afraid to show that they really want to work for a particular company. At such a young age, you may not have a lot of paid work experience, but don't be afraid to talk about your hobbies and any sports teams you have belonged to. If you have been involved in volunteer work, mention this fact as well. It will give the person you are talking to a good idea of what kind of person you are.
Be Unfailingly Polite
Be sure to thank the employer for his or her time when you approach them about a job. Send a thank you note telling them how interested you are in the position after an interview. These small details may make the difference between getting hired and being turned down.
Types of Jobs for 14 Year Olds
Are you having a hard time trying to figure out what jobs for 14 year olds are available? Here are some ideas:
- Child Care
A lot of young people got their first paying job working as a babysitter. You may want to take a First Aid and CPR course before you start looking for customers for this type of venture.
- Restaurants
Fast food restaurants typically hire students to work for them. Check out the places to eat at your local mall's food court to see if any of them are looking for staff.
- Farms
You may be able to get a job grooming horses or doing chores. There is no shortage of work to be done on a farm, and you have a good chance of getting hired if you can demonstrate that you are not afraid of getting your hands dirty.
- Yard Work
Your own neighborhood may be where you get your first paid job. Many young people get started mowing lawns in the summer and shoveling driveways in the winter. If you have neighbors who own a pool, you can ask if they would like some help to keep it clean.
- Home Services
Another option for a young person looking for work is to offer to do odd jobs that homeowners simply don't have time to look after on their own. Attics and garages may need to be cleaned out, or a homeowner may need someone to run errands for them. Many people just find that they are always strapped for time and would appreciate someone helping them to have a bit more time for themselves.
- Delivering Flyers or Newspapers
If you want to get paid work, you do have the option of getting a paper route or delivering flyers in your neighborhood. Be sure that you understand the specific times you will need to make your deliveries so that they can fit into your school schedule before you agree to take the job..
