Jobs in Kenya

From LoveToKnow Jobs

If you are looking for jobs in Kenya, it may not be as easy as you think. Residents claim most of the positions available and you will have to prove that you have higher qualifications. The other difficulty is that unemployment rates are high. The most available jobs are in positions which are dangerous, low paying and labor intensive.

Finding Jobs in Kenya

It is wise to secure a job before going to the country. It may take many months to find employment and living situations are poor in many areas of this country. When starting your search, look for positions in teaching, journalism, and the safari since these are the best paying and most available.

Getting your Visa or Work Permit

After finding a job, you will need to either get a visa or work permit. This is not an easy process and can cost you a lot of money. Your employer can help you with the process, which might make it a little easier. To apply for a visa or work permit while in the United States contact the United States Department of State’s Embassy of Kenya. If you already live there, you will need to visit the embassy in Kenya. All papers are required before you begin employment. It is illegal to work without the necessary approvals.

Sites for Employment

The Internet is one of the easiest ways to find jobs in Kenya. For many jobs, you will be able to send the employer a resume via email. Some of the sites will allow you to submit a resume to be on file for employers to browse when they have vacancies. Here are some of the sites that have listings especially for this country:

  • Best Jobs Kenya: This site provides you with a full listing and the ability to upload your resume. If you find an opportunity you believe you are a good fit for, you just need to submit an application through their site. Your resume will also be visible to potential employers on this site.
  • Learn 4 Good: This regularly updated site has a list of vacancies in this nation. You can search on the site, upload your CV and learn about what companies look for when hiring employees outside of the country in their FAQ section.
  • AMREF: This site is for individuals looking for work in the impoverished areas in and around Kenya. Their focus is safe water and sanitation, malaria, clinical services and disaster management, HIV/AIDs, Tuberculosis, STIs and family health.
  • Kenya Job Board: You will find a lot of information on jobs, the country, tourism, and transportation at this Web site.

Research Prior to Departure

Learn about Kenya as much as possible before you decide to live there. Tourism will help you decide if it is a place you would like to live. These Web sites will give you more information about the area:

  • Kenya Government Site: Find information about the environment, government, education, employment, money, taxes, and health.
  • Kenya State House: Learn about the government and the news.
  • Central Bank of Kenya: You will need to exchange your money to shillings and cents. This site will inform you of the current exchange rate.
  • Kenya Airways: This is the main airline and you will be able to plan your trip to the country using their search engine.
  • Magical Kenya: Learn about popular attractions.

Beware of Scams

With any job search, you will have to beware of scams. Never give out personal information to a potential company before you research its legitimacy. Never divulge your information to someone who has contacted you first. There are many international scams that have cost individuals a lot of money and caused them a lot of trouble.

Research the employment agencies by looking up the company in a search engine with the word scam after it. This will list any problems others had with the company and provide information about the legitimacy of the opportunity you are considering.
