Living and Working in Sweden

Unless you are a Swedish citizen, you must obtain a work permit to work in the country. If you have been offered a position expected to keep you in Sweden for longer than three months, you will also need a residence permit. If you're going to Sweden on an assignment of less than three months in duration, your entry visa and your work permit will be sufficient.

Getting a Swedish work permit is not an easy matter. The country's citizens, foreigners already living in the Sweden, and citizens of the European Union nations are given preference above others seeking employment in the country. Exceptions may be made for individuals who have been offered employment via an international exchange program or in situations in which a temporary labor shortage exists in Sweden, however.

Requirements to Be Considered for a Work Permit

If you wish to apply for a first-time Swedish work permit, you should do so at the Swedish embassy in your home country. The Migration Board in Sweden makes the final decision about whether or not work permits are granted. Work permits are typically approved for up to twelve months, or until the job is expected to end if the position is anticipated to be less than one year in duration.

If you meet the following requirements, you may be eligible for work permit. However, there is no guarantee that one will be granted.

  • Written work offer for employment in Sweden on form AMS PF1704
  • Guarantee from employer of minimum salary to be paid in accordance with a Swedish collective wage agreement
  • Arrangements for accommodations in Sweden
