Kroger Employment
From LoveToKnow Jobs
Kroger employment offers everything from part-time jobs for teenagers to career opportunities for licensed professionals, such as pharmacists.
About Kroger
The Kroger brand began in 1883, when Barney Kroger used his life savings to open a grocery store in Cincinnati, Ohio. The chain's namesake was an innovator in many areas, creating the first in-store bakery, manufacturing his own products to sell, and selling meat and groceries in the same place, which was unheard of at the time. The company has since grown from that single location to more than 2,500 stores in 31 states, making it one of the largest retailers in the United States.
Barney Kroger's emphasis on offering everything under one roof can still be seen in stores today, with pharmacies, on-site gas stations, a floral department, and thousands of products. A 1999 merger with Fred Meyer expanded the corporation, which currently includes Ralphs, King Soopers, City Market, Dillons, Smith's, Fry's Food, Hilander, Food4Less, and many other grocery, drug, and convenience stores.
Career Opportunities
Because Kroger is such a large company, there are many opportunities for employment at the store and corporate level.
Hourly Store and Distribution Center Positions
Hourly store workers are the core of the Kroger brand. They work directly with the customers, stocking products, assisting patrons, working the checkout lane, manning the service desk, and keeping the store clean. Distribution center employees make sure local stores receive the products they need to keep shelves stocked. Workers may choose these positions for part-time or seasonal employment, or build a career as a cashier or clerk.
Shared Services
A large company like Kroger requires a lot of behind-the-scenes work to keep it running smoothly. The shared service centers manage accounting and human resources data for the entire corporation, including accounts receivable, banking, and help desk duties. Service centers are located in Hutchinson, Kansas and Nashville, Tennessee.
Hourly administrative support positions are available in the following shared services divisions:
- Accounting
- Call center
- Human resources
- Payroll
Professional Employment
Professional-level Kroger employment is available in the following areas:
- Administrative support
- Corporate office
- Information systems
- Management
- Manufacturing
- Pharmacy
- Transportation and warehousing
