Sample Job Application Form

From LoveToKnow Jobs

When you are looking for work, you might want to check out a sample job application form so that you know what to expect from a potential employer.

Parts of an Application Form

When you are handed a job application form, it will have some standard sections to it. You can expect that you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Personal Information (name, address, phone number)
  • Position Applied for (full time, part time, or casual)
  • Education (location of high school and college, university, or trade school you attended, certificate, diploma or degree obtained, year you graduated)
  • Employment History (list of previous employers, job titles held, final salary, name of supervisor)
  • Current Employment Status (Are you working now?)
  • Availability (When would you be able to start work?)
  • Special Skills
  • Date of Application

Other Information Requested

Other information you may be asked to provide on an employment application is the names and contact information for references you will be using. There may also be a section where you are asked whether the company you are applying to can contact your present employer. If you aren't sure that would be a good idea, you may want to err on the side of caution and say, "No."

Why Look at a Sample Job Application Form

Some people find filling out forms to be challenging, and if you familiarize yourself with a few different styles of job application forms, it makes the process easier. With a bit of practice, you will feel more comfortable when you are asked to fill out an application form as part of your job search efforts. It may not be convenient for you to take it with you to fill out and return later. You may want to get your information in front of the employer without delay to improve your chances of getting hired.

Filling Out the Job Application Form

  • Before you start to fill out the application form, take some time to read it over first. The form is your opportunity to tell the employer about yourself, so you want to make sure you fill it in correctly.
  • Use a blue or black pen and print your answers. You want to make sure your handwriting is clear and legible.
  • If something isn't clear to you, ask for clarification.

Where to Find Sample Application Forms

If you look online, there are a number of sites where you can find sample employment applications. Here are some examples:

  • QuintCareers.com has a four-page application for employment on the web site. It includes the types of information listed above, and has a section where the applicant can indicate his or her typing speed and the type of computer they are comfortable using. In this case, the applicant is asked about his or her driving record and whether they have a criminal record.
  • Settlement.org offers a very basic job application form. It is only two pages long and covers the applicant's name, contact information, education, and work history. The applicant is also asked to list his or her salary expectations on the form.
  • Another example of a sample job application form is posted on the Intuit.com web site. This example asks the applicant to indicate which days he or she is available to work. The applicant would sign the form at the bottom of the last page, indicating that all the information it contains is true. By signing it, the applicant also authorizes the employer to verify all the information the applicant has provided.
