Telework Exchange Study

According to a recent study, telework opportunities are likely to increase in the future. Telework Exchange conducted a study and released the results in the spring of 2008. Decision makers in federal government IT departments were asked about the role that telework plays when they are making decisions. More than half of the respondents polled stated that they do consider requirements associated with telework when they are making decisions about IT infrastructure.

In addition, more than two-thirds of those individuals polled stated that the amount of money their department would be spending over the next 24 months would increase. The Defense Department estimated that spending would be up 15 percent. In civilian agencies, the amount was slightly higher; estimates came in at 17 percent.

Advantages of Telecommuting for Government Employees

The advantages of telecommuting are the same for government employees as for those people working for other organizations. They include the following:

  • Flexibility - Work can be performed at a time convenient for the employee, as opposed to on a straight 9-5 schedule.
  • More Economical - Employees save on cost of fuel and do not have a lengthy commute before arriving at work.

Concerns Expressed About Telecommuting for Government Employees

Even though there are distinct advantages to work from home government jobs, some managers are hesitant to allow employees to work off site. Security issues surrounding information are often cited as cause for concern when employees work somewhere other than in government offices.

Workers involved in full telecommute work situations can feel isolated from their coworkers. They miss interacting with other people, as they would if they were physically leaving their home to go to an office during work hours.

One way to deal with this challenge is to have the telecommuting staff come in to the office at least occasionally. Calling in by phone or using an Instant Messenger system is another good way to keep in touch when you are working from home.

With a bit of ingenuity, it is possible to enjoy the flexibility of working from home while still keeping in the loop at the office.
