Self Employment from Home
Finding a home-based business or job in which you work for yourself may not be as difficult as you think. First, consider your talents, skills and interests; next, analyze how you can use those factors to make a living. After this simple analysis, you might find that you have more work-from-home options than you originally thought.
Six Home-Based Business Ideas
There are plenty of ways to become a self-employed small business owner. It's up to you to decide whether to formally set up your business as a corporation or sole proprietorship, or if you simply accept project work as an independent contractor. Regardless of the route you take, here are a few ideas that you may want to consider.
1. Virtual Assistant
If you have strong administrative skills, consider starting your own virtual assistant business. You can use the skills that you honed working in an office environment to provide administrative support for clients from the comfort and convenience of your home.
2. Seamstress
If you are handy with a needle, thread and sewing machine, you can turn your talent into a profitable business. At some point or another almost everyone will need a clothing repair or alteration. You can choose to focus on minor tasks like zipper replacement or button re-attachment, or you can go big and alter suits and dresses.
3. Event Planner
If you are organized, creative and interested in planning events, consider starting your own event planning business. You can acquire certification or other credentials by attending classes at your local community college. You may also want to consider building your resume by interning with an established planner who can provide you with experience in the field. Once you're on your own you can charge a flat rate for your services, often 10 to 15 percent of the event's total bill.
4. Baker
If you enjoy baking and you have a creative flair for cakes, you may want to consider starting your own baking business. You can limit your business by cake size or pastry type, or choose to focus on a particular type of event, like children's birthdays. Hostesses often want a professional looking cake for their party, and are willing to hire bakers who have portfolios that show off their work. You can make a name pretty easily for yourself if you're able to produce delicious treats at a relatively low cost.
5. Tutor
If you live in a family friendly neighborhood, try advertising yourself as a tutor. You do not necessarily need to have teaching experience, although it's helpful. If you have the knowledge and patience required to work with a student struggling with a particular subject, you can charge as much as $30.00 an hour for tutoring. You may also want to consider working as an online tutor.
6. Freelance Writer
If you like to write and are willing to follow an employer's writing guidelines, consider working as a freelance writer. Writers are required for websites, business documents and various marketing materials. Many times, employers are willing to pay a reasonable fee for quality writers, and you may be able to command as much as $20.00 for a 500 word article.
Avoiding Work-at-Home Scams
Unfortunately, not all work-at-home businesses or jobs are legitimate. Some companies may try to scam you out of your personal information, or fail to pay you after you complete work for them.
One lesson you will have to learn when working for yourself from home is that not everyone is trustworthy. Follow your gut instinct when relying on websites for job leads or pursuing a position with a company. Always investigate a company's reputation before agreeing to perform work for them.
Never continue to work for a company or client without getting paid. If your payment arrangement states that you are entitled to payment upon delivery of your work, do not work any longer until you receive your paycheck. This will prevent you from going deeper into the hole.
Finally, remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don't believe promises of huge incomes, because that rarely happens. Earning a living while working from home requires dedication and effort, and any company claiming differently is likely untrustworthy.
